Founded in 1893, the Country Club of New Canaan (CCNC) is a family-oriented, member-owned club nestled in a picturesque residential neighborhood of New Canaan in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The Club underwent a full renovation of its clubhouse and pool, completed in March 2020. The state-of-the-art facilities include an 18-hole Willie Park Jr.-designed golf course, tennis courts, paddle courts, squash courts, and a swimming pool complex. Members enjoy an active social calendar, robust junior sports programming, and a popular children’s summer camp. The pool facility features a Division 6 Swim and Dive Team and a Division 3 Water Polo Team, fostering a strong sense of community and competitive spirit.
Pool Facility Hours:
• The pool facility is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
• General hours are 10am – 8pm.
• Hours vary slightly at the beginning and end of season and are TBD.
Role Definition
The Pool Director supervises swimming pool operations and all related activities (excluding food and beverage outlets) in accordance with the desires of the membership and in compliance with the State of Connecticut and Fairfield County’s health and safety guidelines and laws. The primary function of the Pool Director is to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all individuals who utilize the swimming pool facilities.
Supervision
The Pool Director reports to the Assistant General Manager and works closely with key stakeholders, including coaches, the Camp Director, the Board of CCNC, and the Facilities Manager, to ensure the pool operates efficiently and professionally. The role requires a proactive, independent leader with strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in addressing challenges or consulting on policy matters. The Pool Director listens to member feedback, evaluates suggestions, and communicates actionable plans to the Assistant General Manager for approval, ensuring alignment with Club standards.

The Pool Director maintains consistent communication with the management team and staff under their supervision, utilizing phone, email, and in-person interactions to ensure smooth operations and alignment with Club goals.
In collaboration with the management team and staff, the Pool Director is responsible for achieving safety, revenue, and service objectives, contributing to the Club’s mission of delivering exceptional experiences for its members and their guests.
General Duties
Recruitment, Training, Scheduling and Supervision of Pool Staff
• Recruitment: Manages the application process, conducts interviews, and selects lifeguards based on qualifications, scheduling flexibility, professional appearance, and character. Ensures all candidates hold a valid lifeguard training certificate.
• Training: Reviews Club policies with staff, provides comprehensive training to ensure lifeguards meet job performance requirements, and ensures compliance with state and local health and safety regulations.
• Scheduling: Creates staff schedules that align with the Club's operational needs while adhering to the approved budget. Obtains prior approval from the Assistant General Manager for any overtime.
• Supervision: Ensures all pool operations staff, including swimming coach staff, wear uniforms at all times and maintain a professional and responsible demeanor. Promotes member interaction and satisfaction by overseeing staff conduct. Maintains cleanliness and safety standards in the locker room facilities, camp pavilion, playground area, and overall pool area.
Swim/Dive/Water Polo Teams and Camp
• Partners with the Head Swimming, Dive, and Water Polo Coaches to oversee and support the swim, dive, and water polo programs.
• Partners with the Camp Director to plan and coordinate camp-related pool activities.
• Works with the Head Swimming Coach and Camp Director to schedule and organize Club events, including pool parties, children's races, recreational swimming programs, the Club's sports camp, and competitive swim meets and invitational tournaments.
Rules and Regulations
• Ensures pool operations staff enforce all rules and regulations mandated by state and local laws, as well as those established by the Club. Posts necessary signage and information to communicate these rules to members and guests.
• Maintains a professional relationship with local health and safety officials to ensure full compliance with applicable laws. Promptly notifies management of any significant violations requiring immediate attention.
Safety and Maintenance
• Updates and submits the required Pool Safety Plan to the Fairfield County Department of Health for review and compliance.
• Works toward obtaining a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) designation if not already certified.
• Completes accident reports in the event of an incident and notifies management. Provides appropriate assistance, first aid, and medical attention as needed.
• Oversees the general housekeeping and physical appearance of the aquatic facility, excluding food and beverage areas, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment.
• Monitors pool chemistry to maintain proper legal balance and ensures the pool is immaculate and aesthetically pleasing for members and guests.
• Reports all maintenance issues to the Facilities Manager for immediate resolution.
Other
• Develops and organizes recreational swimming programs designed to engage a broad range of members, creating a fun and rewarding experience.
• Maintains consistent availability and visibility to members, addressing questions, comments, and concerns related to swimming pool operations.
• Exhibits a positive, outgoing, and energetic attitude, actively engaging with members to foster a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent; a college degree is preferred.
• Current Lifeguard Certification.
• Proven experience supervising large swimming pool operations.
• Private country club experience is highly desirable.
• Proficient in using Windows operating systems and related applications.
• Strong ability to read, comprehend, and execute instructions effectively.
Necessary Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
• Deliver high-quality service with a focus on continued improvement.
• Teach CPR and First Aid courses effectively.
• Comprehensive knowledge of pool chemistry, maintenance, and operations.
• Understand health and safety regulations for aquatic facilities.
• Technical aptitude for operating and troubleshooting pool equipment.
• Train, motivate, and supervise staff.
• Strong crisis management and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Flexibility to work seasonal hours, including weekends and holidays.
Physical Demands:
The duties of this job require the employee to regularly communicate effectively, both verbally and audibly, and move freely in an outdoor environment as well as within a multi-floor building. The role frequently involves visually monitoring the surroundings to ensure safety and operational standards. Routine physical activities include bending, stooping, standing, walking, and lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Compensation:
A competitive weekly base salary, commensurate with experience and aligned with peer Clubs, will be offered to the selected candidate. Additionally, the Pool Director will receive a portion of merchandise sales and lesson revenue. Employee meals, as per the Club’s regular schedule, will also be provided. This position is classified as Exempt and Seasonal.
